Why Did You Choose Domestic Adoption?

That is a question I get a lot-how on earth did we ever decide on what kind of adoption to pursue?
For us, when we began pursuing adoption, we were truly complete novices. I hadn’t met anyone who’d adopted in recent years, didn’t really know of any local agencies, or what the process entailed. Once we turned on our adoption radar though, we started noticing things. Like an international agency that advertises in the local paper and holds frequent information meetings.
We attended and thought, “hmm….we could do that. It would be an interesting way to become parents, and we love to travel….” but we weren’t motivated to start finding out about how to start the home study process or how to seriously finance such a venture.
Around the same time, I saw an ad in our local archdiocesan newspaper that a domestic agency was having an informational meeting. We went, and when we left I immediately called my mom and my best friend and said,” WE CAN DO THIS! WE ARE DOING THIS!” And the next day I started filling out the paper work and found out how to begin the home study process.
Angels were singing. Birds were chirping. The huge weight that had been sitting on our shoulders since a fateful day at the RE’s was gone. WE were going to do this. WE were going to adopt a baby right here in Indiana. WE were going to be someone’s mom and dad.
So, that’s how we chose. And a few months later, Macey’s birthmother chose us.
If you’ve adopted, how did you choose which path to follow? If you are in the process, did you have an Ah-Ha moment?
