For what it’s worth, my parents married transracially, and other than a couple of years spent in Taiwan and Hong Kong early on, I honestly can’t remember meeting anyone else in school with any Asian ancestry. I don’t think it hurt me a bit. There might have been a couple of times when other kids made fun of my race, but kids will always find some way to make fun of each other when they want to.

I would not worry too much about it. You’re her parents, you’re a human being, she’s a human being – race really doesn’t matter very much.

Tonggu Momma is a very wise lady. I think this is a wonderful post and something that we all should think about. We live in a very small neighborhood with quite a bit of diversity for which I am grateful. But the community overall that we live in is not diverse and I worry about our daughter being one of the only minority students in her school.

I so hear you on the school!

There might be options though. Our city has charter schools and I found one that was extremely awesome! And even go MM in…and the next day we got orders. Suck.

There are also private schools you can check into.

With such a great neighborhood I would see if I couldn’t find a way around the school issue…if it becomes one.
