Both the husband and I grew up with adoption as an accepted way to build a family. Between the two of us, we have five cousins who joined our families through adoption (one in a domestic, open adoption; four through Asian international adoption). Not to mention how the husband feels about his dad, who actually isn’t “really” his dad.
I heard from other mom that the process would be a lot of work; forms to fill out, meetings with a social worker, medical exams, preparing for a long overseas trip, getting our kids ready for the new addition, penny pinching. But the paper work was insurmountable; easily passing my expectations in the first few weeks. It became my job, I had a goal and I was working towards the hugest check ever to be marked off any list; adopting a child.
In the beginning there was passion. There was excitement and thrill. There was a sense of purpose and ability and wow squeeeee I can’t believe I’m getting to do this! In the beginning, there were puppies and rainbows and sunshine and chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate. But as we all know, rainbows come with rain, puppies come with poo, and chocolate… well chocolate comes with an increased pant size.
On December 28th, 2008 I gave birth to twins. Two little girls entered my life and left my life, all in the same moment. On that beautiful day, I handed those babies to their father and my role as their “mother” ended. I am a gestational surrogate. And I grow families.
