As a Middle School teacher I always ended my school year with poetry because my students were always squirrelly. For me, poetry was exciting to teach the final weeks of school. The grass was green, the trees were in bloom, the flowers were sweet. And Middle Schoolers?

Ah, the sweet puppy love. Cute 7th graders held hands and stared at each other across the lunch table. They shared cute little text messages and walked each other to class. Who am I kidding? 7th graders were getting more nookie than I was some days. Hurumph.

And, they knew how to write about it in some of their poems.

But this isn’t about them. This is about you.

And the Winners Are….

The accounting firm of Dewey, Cheetham, and Howe have been holding the results of the Mother’s Day Six Word Memoir giveaway in a hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar for the last couple of weeks or so. Winners were picked randomly, for just showing up. And the decisions of the judges will be final.

First we’d like to thank everybody who participated, it was a tough thing to do and all of the entries were wonderful. Thank you for giving so much of yourself and your moms. It was the best blog carnival ever.

The writers and staff at Grown In My Heart were ineligible for prizes, not matter how much they begged. It was all really nice stuff and we’d like to thank all the folks that made it possible for us to envy our carnival participants.

Mother’s Day Adoption Carnival

Once asked to write a full story in six words, legend has it that novelist Ernest Hemingway responded: “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

We all know that pictures tell a thousand words.

We’re hoping you can tell us what your picture says in six.

Carnival:

Post a picture of your mother (the one you most refer to as a mom). This could be your grandmother, your birthmother, your aunt, your sister, your biological mom, your adoptive mom, your best friend, your surrogate mom…Your MOTHER (or both your mothers).
Include a Six-Word-Memoir with the picture describing her/what she means to you.

Adoption Carnival VI: the Racism Rainbow

I didn’t know what the topic for this carnival was going to be until today when I read our newest writer’s post; Little Bigots at Basketball. It hurt my heart to read it. Then, I read Tonggu Momma’s post on Chinese Food. Seriously, what kind of parents are we raising?

My family lives in a very white community. And by white I mean WHITE. It’s a posh Chicago suburb–high rent, good education (the reason we live here), but it has little culture. The community has been good for our special needs son and, so far, they have welcomed our Guatemalan son. But, will the children continue to welcome them as they grow older? Will their parents teach them tolerance? Will they show them that race doesn’t matter, that skin color is really only skin deep?

This month, coincidentally, is African American History month. A month wherein we are supposed to reflect upon the history of racism in America and how we abolished slavery: how we rid the nation of segregation.

If you read the two posts above it looks like racism is still in America. Perhaps parents need to feed children a few more Skittles (ya know, so they can experience the rainbow?).

How do you handle racism? GIMH knows that some of you may not have encountered this in adoption but what WOULD you do if you were to encounter it?

Adoption Carnival V: What do you want REFORMED?

Adoption Reform means so many things because we all come from different parts of the adoption community. To you reform may mean making original birth certificates available to every adoptee, to me it may mean making all countries Hague compliant.

Almost everyone involved in adoption believes that the adoption community needs some reform.

So, tell us what you want reformed. Help us spread the word a little (okay, a lot) and lets get everyone involved in this Carnival. Make sure to link to Mr. Linky.

Adoption Carnival III: Photos of Adoption

As the publisher of this site I chose the topic for the third carnival on the advice of a friend who thought it might be really interesting to include the children in the topic. But, I didn’t think about our readers who don’t have children or our readers who are not adopted. It was, unfortunately, an oversight. I do think that we can amend this topic in the future to include all of us but I want to give you all time to do it because I think it could be really amazing.

So, Carnival IV will be: The Art of Adoption. Show us, in poem, in picture, in paint, what adoption is to you.

Carnival III: Photos of Adoption. What is your most treasured adoption photo (or two)? Block out faces if you have to, find a scanner, or simply tell us about it if you can’t post it. We do understand that. Adversely, if you don’t have one, tell us why you don’t.

What No One Told Me About Adoption: Carnival One

This is the first Carnival that Grown in My Heart Writer’s have done and we, of course, want to start out with a topic that everyone can do. Everyone, in some way or another, is touched by adoption. Even if you have not adopted, are not adopted, or have not relinquished a child you are touched by someone who has experienced adoption personally.

What did people forget to tell you about adoption? What did they omit or conveniently not tell you before you adopted or relinquished your child?

Tell us your truths.

No one told me about post adoption depression and how severe it can get when it is not treated.
No one told me that there would be days when I would not like my son even though I love him fiercely. And no one told me that one of the hardest things I would ever have to do is tell him how much I loved him even though I didn’t feel like it.
No one told me about the post traumatic stress and it’s effect on the entire family.
Likewise, no one told me how to deal with SPD, anxiety, night-terrors, pin worms, etc. And that was just the first week he was home. Learning those ropes on my own was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
No one told me how happy I would be when I finally realized my oldest son was attaching.
No one told me that after years of the pricklies from my oldest how wonderful it would be to have a little one who loves to cuddle, who looks you straight in the eye, and who molds right into me.
No one told me how rewarding it would be to see him develop from a child who lived in an orphanage into a little boy. He is astounding, no matter what diagnoses’ he has.
No one told me how long it would take for my immediate family to attach and understand) adoption.
No one told me how MUCH I would adore my sons. How much I would love them.
No one told me how rewarding it would be to be a mother and how much I would want to teach them about the world, about their culture, and about being a good person.
No one told me how much I would love giving to them.
No one told me how much I would crave sleep and quiet time.
And no one told me how cute little boys look in their pajamas.
