Is Adoption the new Celeb Fad?

The most recent adoptions in the spotlight come from celebrity moms Angelina, Madonna, Sheryl, Meg, Mary Louise Parker, Lauren Holly, and many more.

But what “gets” me is that so many celebrities say they want to adopt in lieu of having biological children (or after they have biological children). They seem to think that it is such a simple process (we have such money to give), that it is a great thing to do for a child (I can save him!), that it is the easy way out (because well, pregnancy interferes with the real world, ya know?).

But, kudos for women (and families) who apparently adopt because of medical reasons (and don’t want the publicity). Sinitta adopted two toddlers this past summer, Laura Innes adopted Mia from China five years ago, and Goran Visnjic of ER and his wife adopted domestically this spring (unconfirmed medical but did not want the publicity around the adoption).

Other famous celebrity parents:

George Lucas, Michele Pfeiffer, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Ewan Mcgregor, Calista Flockhart, Diane Keaton, Kate Jackson, Steven Speilberg and Kate Capshaw.

  • [...] Marcie at A Child Chosen blogs about adoption.  In her most recent post she writes about Is Adoption the New Celeb Fab? [...]

This is a very silly and hurtful post, sorry. As if only women who can’t have babies of their own should be allowed to adopt. As if when a celeb adopt it is only for publicity. As if people should only be allowed to adopt kids from within the US, which supposedly is one of the richest nations in the world.

Please think some more about a topic like this before you write!

Okay then…go to Celebrity Baby Blog and count, literally count how many celebrities state “I might adopt a third child” or “I’ve always wanted to have babies and adopt”, or “I’ve always wanted to adopt”, or even just “I think I’ll adopt next time”.

I think that people jump on the bandwagon because it is popular and say things they don’t really mean. Look at the Britney publicity.

What I think many people don’t understand is the difficult process and the hardships and grief these children come with. All the money and love in the world can’t heal this.

And, I don’t think I said anything negative about international adoptions. I have one child from Russia and am currently in the process of adopting from Guatemala and domestically.

  • Marcie says:

Oh, I do think many adopt because they do want to be parents but I think many say it just to get publicity and never intend to.

You forgot about my fave celeb adoptive mom: Nia Vardalos. She wrote a beautiful piece for People Magazine about the experience of adopting their 3-yr-old daughter. check it out here: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20277865,00.html

This post was hurtful to me as a mom who CHOSE to adopt although there were no medical reasons forcing me to do so.

I appreciate your point that rich, trendy people should not throw their money around and make light of very difficult adoption processes as if they are going to pick a cute little puppy out from the pound. We were in process to bring our children home during the first round of Madonna adoption publicity, and cringed to hear what the media (and other celebs) were saying that was so clearly making adoptive parents look like total morons.

HOWEVER, this post does imply that parents who choose, as we did, to adopt in spite of being medically able to give birth are somehow much less legitemate than parents who adopt because of medical reasons. The very title of this blog, “Grown in my Heart,” implies that families — REAL, LEGITEMATE families — can “grow” from a variety of sources, both biological and adoptive. Please recognize that those who CHOOSE to adopt can be real, legitamate, thoughtful, and responsible parents who adopt for the RIGHT REASONS.

Adoptive families fight enough extra battles without having to deflect stones thrown by fellow adoptive parents.

I wrote this quite a long time ago, as you can see. Since then, I have had many experiences that have led me to start this site for the reasons you state above. My views are much more open now, obviously.

However, I still get upset when celebs toss the “I’d love to adopt someday” card around just to get publicity or because they are talking to someone who they think would like to hear that line. Do you really think all celebs would like to adopt?

I tend to aggree with E on this. As one of the very few families out there that is choosing to adopt when we could have biological children this is a hurtful post. Do I think some celebs take it too far and are really stupid with the way they go about things? Of course. But I also hear people I know throw around the adoption thing a lot, when we talk about our adoption I hear tons of people say “oh I would like to do that one day” do I truly believe they want to, sometimes yes, sometimes no. But all that is not why I am commenting, I think that if your views have changed, which I certainly hope they have, then you shouldn’t have reposted this in the first place. At 23 I am fighting the hardest battle of my life to adopt our daughter with far too many people thinking that what we are doing is crazy when I am young and can have kids now, that we should wait to adopt when I am older and have had a handful of children already and maybe it wouldn’t be as wise to birth another child. I think it isn’t the smartest thing to judge women that choose to adopt without medical reasons if you don’t know them. Weather you can birth a child or not has no bearing on what kind of mother you are going to be.
