Grandfather Frost

If you have adopted from Russia then you surely know about Grandfather Frost, or Ded Maroz…the Russian version of the man in red. He comes decorated with traditional embroidering and edged with the same snow white fluffiness, the red cap, white mittens, and felt boots. He has the same snow white beard, red nose, and rosy cheeks. But, he also carries a staff made of ice with a sparkling star.

Ded Moroz is usually with his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, who helps him with the presents and plays with the children.

On the eve of Christmas the family’s oldest member would go out on the porch and offer Moroz a spoonful or oatmeal kissel or kutya, as the custom was to feed Moroz to gratify him.

Father Frost has now set up residence in Russia in a town called Veliki Ustyug. His estate is located in the forest, 11 km away from the town, which has been acknowledged the homeland of Father Frost for its rich history, attractive architecture and the beauty of its nature. The estate harbors the house of Ded Moroz and cozy cottages for his guests, winter playgrounds and other attractions for children and adults. Sculptures of fairy tale characters beautifully lit at night add to the magic atmosphere of the place.
